Lentil Market Size in Kenya

After three years of growth, the Kenyan lentil market decreased by -9.6% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a temperate expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Lentil Production in Kenya

In value terms, lentil production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of lentils in Kenya shrank modestly to X kg per ha in 2022, approximately equating 2021. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 3.3%. The lentil yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of lentils production in Kenya amounted to X ha, almost unchanged from 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. Exports from Kenya

Lentil exports from Kenya expanded notably to X tons in 2022, surging by 11% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 197% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lentil exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 216% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Mozambique (X tons), Canada (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main destinations of lentil exports from Kenya, together accounting for 85% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Canada (with a CAGR of +319.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the key foreign market for lentils exports from Kenya, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Uganda, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Canada amounted to +495.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-2.2% per year) and Uganda (+11.2% per year).

In 2022, the average lentil export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -14.2% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 102% against the previous year. From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+42.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lentil Imports

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of lentils, when their volume decreased by -0.9% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 261% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lentil imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 217% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Canada (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of lentil imports to Kenya, together accounting for 80% of total imports. Russia, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +55.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest lentil suppliers to Kenya were Turkey ($X), Canada ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 84% share of total imports. Russia, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Russia, with a CAGR of +39.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average lentil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -10.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 28%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
