Exports from Kenya

In 2022, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery, when their volume increased by 57% to X units. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 742%. The exports peaked at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, loading machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 737%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Mozambique (X units) was the main destination for loading machinery exports from Kenya, accounting for a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, loading machinery exports to Mozambique exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tanzania (X units), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Uganda (X units), with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Mozambique amounted to +42.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (-11.5% per year) and Uganda (-25.9% per year).

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) remains the key foreign market for lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery exports from Kenya, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Mozambique totaled +51.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+16.4% per year) and Tanzania (-11.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average loading machinery export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 101%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, the amount of lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery imported into Kenya declined significantly to X units, shrinking by -63% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 338% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, loading machinery imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 138% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

China (X units), South Africa (X units) and Canada (X units) were the main suppliers of loading machinery imports to Kenya, together comprising 56% of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Belgium, Germany, Australia, France, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Spain and the United States, which together accounted for a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +48.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Canada ($X), South Africa ($X) and China ($X) were the largest loading machinery suppliers to Kenya, with a combined 50% share of total imports. Germany, France, India, Belgium, Saudi Arabia, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Turkey and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +62.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average loading machinery import price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 92% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+15.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
