Tanzania (X tons) was the main destination for malt exports from Kenya, accounting for a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, malt exports to Tanzania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Rwanda (X tons), with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Tanzania totaled +5.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (-26.3% per year) and Rwanda (-3.3% per year).
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the key foreign market for malt exports from Kenya, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uganda ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Tanzania stood at +6.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (-27.0% per year) and Rwanda (-12.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average malt export price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 6.7%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya
In 2022, supplies from abroad of malt decreased by -43.5% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 669%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
In value terms, malt imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 673%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Lithuania (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of malt to Kenya, accounting for a 34% share of total imports. Moreover, malt imports from Lithuania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Lithuania totaled +33.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+25.7% per year) and India (+65.9% per year).
In value terms, Lithuania ($X) constituted the largest supplier of malt to Kenya, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 3.5% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 1.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Lithuania amounted to +27.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+26.4% per year) and the UK (-16.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average malt import price amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 35%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+14.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
