Mercury Market Size in Kenya
In 2021, the Kenyan mercury market increased by 33% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a dramatic contraction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 1,475% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mercury exports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 1,598%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main destination for mercury exports from Kenya, accounting for a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, mercury exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X kg), eightfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Democratic Republic of the Congo amounted to -4.4%.
In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) remains the key foreign market for mercuries exports from Kenya, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uganda ($X), with a 5.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Democratic Republic of the Congo amounted to +2.6%.
Export Prices by Country
The average mercury export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 7.4% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, mercury export price decreased by -26.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.4%).
Mercury Imports
Imports into Kenya
After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of mercuries increased by 16% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mercury imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a dramatic shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 104%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Switzerland (X tons), Japan (X tons) and the United States (X kg) were the main suppliers of mercury imports to Kenya, with a combined 62% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +37.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Spain ($X) and Japan ($X) constituted the largest mercury suppliers to Kenya, with a combined 65% share of total imports. Switzerland, Russia, Mexico, Vietnam, Singapore, India, Hong Kong SAR and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Switzerland, with a CAGR of +18.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Import Prices by Country
The average mercury import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 41%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+12.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
