In 2022, the Kenyan NPK fertilizer market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption showed mild growth. Consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After four years of growth, overseas shipments of mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers decreased by -22% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, NPK fertilizer exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 113%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) were the main destinations of NPK fertilizer exports from Kenya, together comprising 98% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +21.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest markets for NPK fertilizer exported from Kenya were Rwanda ($X), Uganda ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), together comprising 96% of total exports.

Rwanda, with a CAGR of +19.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average NPK fertilizer export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 25%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (-0.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, purchases abroad of mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 627%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, NPK fertilizer imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 515%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Norway (X tons) were the main suppliers of NPK fertilizer imports to Kenya, together comprising 74% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +14.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Romania ($X) and Finland ($X) constituted the largest NPK fertilizer suppliers to Kenya, together comprising 62% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Russia, with a CAGR of +9.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average NPK fertilizer import price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
