The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 542% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Uganda (X tons), Bahrain (X kg) and Israel (X kg) were the main destinations of nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from Kenya, with a combined 88% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +131.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for nutmeg, mace and cardamoms exports from Kenya, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 6.9% share.

From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 549% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 215% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom supplier to Kenya, with a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Guatemala (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (X tons), with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates stood at +16.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Guatemala (+69.1% per year) and India (-17.3% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), India ($X) and Guatemala ($X) constituted the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom suppliers to Kenya, together accounting for 94% of total imports.

Guatemala, with a CAGR of +58.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -73.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 316%.
