Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 269% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of oil and water paints and varnishes skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild downturn. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of oil and water paints and varnishes to Kenya, accounting for a 24% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of oil and water paints and varnishes from Malaysia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Malaysia stood at +19.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-17.9% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-13.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of oil and water paints and varnishes to Kenya, comprising 17% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with an 8.2% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +13.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+11.3% per year) and South Africa (+48.0% per year).
