The Kenyan optical fiber and bundle market dropped markedly to $X in 2022, reducing by -19.1% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption recorded a pronounced slump. Optical fiber and bundle consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of optical fibers and bundles increased by 19% to X kg, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 175% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, optical fiber and bundle exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 186%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Tanzania (X kg) was the main destination for optical fiber and bundle exports from Kenya, accounting for a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, optical fiber and bundle exports to Tanzania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X kg), sevenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Tanzania amounted to +36.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (-5.9% per year) and Somalia (-11.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for optical fiber and bundle exported from Kenya were Uganda ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Somalia ($X), with a combined 100% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +35.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average optical fiber and bundle export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -37.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 89%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+31.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya
Optical fiber and bundle imports into Kenya contracted dramatically to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -24.7% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports showed a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 1,170%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, optical fiber and bundle imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 1,183%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
India (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of optical fiber and bundle imports to Kenya, with a combined 96% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +76.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest optical fiber and bundle suppliers to Kenya were India ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 81% of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +63.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average optical fiber and bundle import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, optical fiber and bundle import price decreased by -35.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 72% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
