Orange Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan orange market rose sharply to $X in 2022, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a measured expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Orange Production in Kenya

In value terms, orange production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 191%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average yield of oranges in Kenya expanded markedly to X tons per ha, with an increase of 7.6% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the yield increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the average orange yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of oranges were harvested in Kenya; with an increase of 2.4% against the year before. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 42%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the orange harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of oranges decreased by -22% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 1,146% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, orange exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 597% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and South Sudan (X tons) were the main destinations of orange exports from Kenya, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +99.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Rwanda ($X), South Sudan ($X) and Uganda ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for orange exported from Kenya worldwide, with a combined 94% share of total exports.

Rwanda, with a CAGR of +85.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average orange export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 42% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Sudan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Sudan (+13.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Orange Imports

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, supplies from abroad of oranges was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 186% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, orange imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Tanzania (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of orange to Kenya, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, orange imports from Tanzania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uganda (X tons), sevenfold. Egypt (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Tanzania totaled -13.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uganda (+37.1% per year) and Egypt (+15.4% per year).

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constituted the largest supplier of oranges to Kenya, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Uganda, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Egypt totaled +30.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (-9.4% per year) and Uganda (+56.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average orange import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -12.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 539%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
