Perfume Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan perfume market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, growing by 104% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate resilient growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Kenya

For the third year in a row, Kenya recorded decline in shipments abroad of perfumes and toilet waters, which decreased by -6.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 619% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, perfume exports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 2,189%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for perfume exports from Kenya, accounting for a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, perfume exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tanzania (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Rwanda amounted to +5.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+32.3% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.6% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for perfumes and toilet waters exports from Kenya, comprising 6.8% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United Arab Emirates stood at +11.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+3.7% per year) and Tanzania (+46.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average perfume export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 281%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+20.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

Perfume imports into Kenya skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 100% on the previous year. In general, imports posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 149%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, perfume imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 161%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest perfume supplier to Kenya, with a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, perfume imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United Arab Emirates stood at +7.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+20.6% per year) and India (+19.0% per year).

In value terms, France ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest perfume suppliers to Kenya, with a combined 55% share of total imports. The UK, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, India, China and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +28.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average perfume import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 125%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
