Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 321% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, phosphoric acid exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 582% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Burundi (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) were the main destinations of phosphoric acid exports from Kenya, together comprising 89% of total exports. Tanzania and Seychelles lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Seychelles (with a CAGR of +35.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Burundi ($X), Uganda ($X) and Rwanda ($X) were the largest markets for phosphoric acid exported from Kenya worldwide, together comprising 93% of total exports.
Uganda, with a CAGR of +23.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average phosphoric acid export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 67%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+10.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Phosphoric Acid Imports
Imports into Kenya
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of phosphoric acid and polyphosphoric acids decreased by -8.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, phosphoric acid imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) was the main phosphoric acid supplier to Kenya, accounting for a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, phosphoric acid imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +3.5%.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of phosphoric acid and polyphosphoric acids to Kenya, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 4.7% share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +3.3%.
Import Prices by Country
The average phosphoric acid import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 17%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for India totaled $X per ton.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-0.2%).
