Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 594%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pigments, opacifiers and colours exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 488%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tanzania (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Burundi (X tons) were the main destinations of pigments, opacifiers and colours exports from Kenya, together accounting for 84% of total exports. Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 16%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +63.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X), Ethiopia ($X) and Burundi ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for pigments, opacifiers and colours exported from Kenya worldwide, together comprising 91% of total exports.

Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, approx. X tons of pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass were imported into Kenya; waning by -11.9% compared with the previous year. In general, imports saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 79%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pigments, opacifiers and colours imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of pigments, opacifiers and colours to Kenya, with a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, pigments, opacifiers and colours imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), twofold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +42.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+2.0% per year) and India (-10.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass to Kenya, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +47.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+3.4% per year) and India (-4.8% per year).

The average pigments, opacifiers and colours import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -7.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 99.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
