Exports from Kenya

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of pipes and other articles of cement decreased by -31.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 540% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, cement pipe exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 1,406%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for cement pipe exports from Kenya, accounting for a 96% share of total exports. Moreover, cement pipe exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Rwanda amounted to +105.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-1.5% per year) and New Zealand (-49.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for cement pipe exported from Kenya were Rwanda ($X), the UK ($X) and New Zealand ($X), with a combined 97% share of total exports.

Rwanda, with a CAGR of +75.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average cement pipe export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -22% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 135% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, the amount of pipes and other articles of cement imported into Kenya surged to X tons, increasing by 217% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 366% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cement pipe imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 447%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest cement pipe supplier to Kenya, with a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, cement pipe imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +32.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+72.9% per year) and Spain (+22.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pipes and other articles of cement to Kenya, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 8.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +25.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+54.2% per year) and Spain (+7.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cement pipe import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 30% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
