Plastic Container Market Size in Kenya
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Kenyan plastic container market, when its value decreased by -2% to $X. Overall, the total consumption indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +49.3% against 2017 indices. Plastic container consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Plastic Container Production in Kenya
In value terms, plastic container production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +52.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 24%. Plastic container production peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports from Kenya
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of plastic containers, when their volume decreased by -53.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 123%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, plastic container exports fell sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 77% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Uganda (X tons), South Sudan (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) were the main destinations of plastic container exports from Kenya, together accounting for 55% of total exports. Tanzania, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Comoros, Zambia, Somalia, the UK, India and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +41.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Uganda ($X), Ethiopia ($X) and South Sudan ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for plastic container exported from Kenya worldwide, with a combined 52% share of total exports. Rwanda, Tanzania, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Somalia, the United States, the UK and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.
Among the main countries of destination, Comoros, with a CAGR of +57.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average plastic container export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Comoros (+25.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Plastic Container Imports
Imports into Kenya
In 2021, purchases abroad of plastic containers increased by 1.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 103% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plastic container imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), India (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic container imports to Kenya, together comprising 56% of total imports. These countries were followed by Egypt, the UK, Israel, Malaysia, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, the Netherlands, Taiwan (Chinese) and Germany, which together accounted for a further 25%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Portugal (with a CAGR of +68.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest plastic container suppliers to Kenya were India ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 62% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Israel, the UK, Italy, Malaysia, Portugal, South Africa, Taiwan (Chinese), the Netherlands and Germany, which together accounted for a further 18%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Portugal, with a CAGR of +49.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average plastic container import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, plastic container import price decreased by -4.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+15.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
