Plastic Bag Market Size in Kenya

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of plastic sacks and bags, when their volume increased by 31% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 251% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bag exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 294% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Tanzania (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) were the main destinations of plastic bag exports from Kenya, with a combined 70% share of total exports. Burundi, the UK, the Netherlands and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +60.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of plastic sacks and bags imported into Kenya fell notably to X tons, which is down by -16.8% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bag imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 88%. In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plastic sacks and bags to Kenya, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with an 8% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +4.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+0.5% per year) and Italy (+2.5% per year).

Based on 2022 figures, plastic bag import price increased by +8.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 32% against the previous year.
