The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 110% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for plastic household ware exports from Kenya, with a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic household ware exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Sudan (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Rwanda amounted to +9.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (+1.9% per year) and South Sudan (+9.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for plastic household ware exported from Kenya were Rwanda ($X), Uganda ($X) and South Sudan ($X), with a combined 65% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Burundi and Malawi, which together accounted for a further 24%.

Malawi, with a CAGR of +64.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 163% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic household ware imports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt decrease. Pakistan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at -8.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-12.4% per year) and Pakistan (+15.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plastics household articles and toilet articles to Kenya, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with an 8.2% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at -5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-13.3% per year) and South Africa (+7.7% per year).

In 2021, the average plastic household ware import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -10.6% against the previous year.
