Polyamide Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan polyamide market rose sharply to $X in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a temperate expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of polyamides (in primary forms) increased by 58% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 1,332% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, polyamide exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 850%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for polyamide exports from Kenya, accounting for a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, polyamide exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tanzania (X tons), eightfold. Rwanda (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+22.5% per year) and Rwanda (+5.9% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Rwanda ($X) and Uganda ($X) constituted the largest markets for polyamide exported from Kenya worldwide, together comprising 87% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Uganda, with a CAGR of +91.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average polyamide export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -21.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 33% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+45.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of polyamides (in primary forms) decreased by -5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -27.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 102%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, polyamide imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -3.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 92%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

India (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of polyamide imports to Kenya, with a combined 61% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +144.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of polyamides (in primary forms) to Kenya, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from India stood at +5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+43.1% per year) and the United States (+62.0% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
