Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, polyethylene glycol and polyether exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 2,271%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Malawi (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) were the main destinations of polyethylene glycol and polyether exports from Kenya, together comprising 73% of total exports. Rwanda, Madagascar, Burundi, India and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +36.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for polyethylene glycol and polyether exported from Kenya were Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Malawi ($X) and Uganda ($X), together accounting for 67% of total exports. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of polyethylene glycols and polyethers in primary forms, when their volume decreased by -23.2% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, polyethylene glycol and polyether imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +103.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
