In 2021, the Kenyan prepared mustard market decreased by -6% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, posted a resilient expansion. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared mustard exports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 584%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for prepared mustard exports from Kenya, with a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, prepared mustard exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X kg), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Canada (X kg), with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Sudan stood at +11.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-13.1% per year) and Canada (+156.9% per year).

In value terms, South Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for prepared mustard exports from Kenya, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Rwanda ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to South Sudan stood at +33.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-8.3% per year) and Tanzania (-1.7% per year).

In 2021, the average prepared mustard export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 66% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of prepared mustard, when their volume increased by 13% to X tons. In general, imports posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 78%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, prepared mustard imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 62%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of prepared mustard to Kenya, with a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, prepared mustard imports from Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (X tons), with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Egypt amounted to +28.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+42.0% per year) and the United States (-10.1% per year).
