Printing Press Market Size in Kenya

In 2022, the Kenyan printing press market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the amount of printing presses exported from Kenya shrank notably to X units, dropping by -30.3% compared with 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 470% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, printing press exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a measured expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 155% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Sudan (X units) was the main destination for printing press exports from Kenya, accounting for a 39% share of total exports. Moreover, printing press exports to Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ethiopia (X units), twofold. Rwanda (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Sudan amounted to +26.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ethiopia (+28.6% per year) and Rwanda (+0.2% per year).

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the key foreign market for printing presses exports from Kenya, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uganda ($X), with a 9.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Sudan, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Africa stood at +86.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (+0.2% per year) and Sudan (+7.3% per year).

In 2022, the average printing press export price amounted to $X per unit, growing by 37% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 215%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Ethiopia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of printing presses increased by 55% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 75%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, printing press imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest printing press supplier to Kenya, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, printing press imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Israel (X units), threefold. Austria (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +33.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (+63.1% per year) and Austria (+25.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest printing press suppliers to Kenya were Germany ($X), China ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 36% share of total imports. India, Austria, Taiwan (Chinese), the UK, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Israel, with a CAGR of +29.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average printing press import price amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -36.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 80%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for Israel ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
