In 2021, the Kenyan vitamin market decreased by -11.7% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a resilient expansion. Vitamin consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports from Kenya

In 2021, vitamin exports from Kenya reduced to X tons, which is down by -6.2% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports faced a sharp setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 87%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vitamin exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 396% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Zambia (X tons) was the main destination for vitamin exports from Kenya, accounting for a 24% share of total exports. Moreover, vitamin exports to Zambia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X tons), twofold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Zambia totaled +25.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (-42.6% per year) and India (+13.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for vitamin exported from Kenya were Zambia ($X), Burundi ($X) and India ($X), with a combined 46% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi and Nigeria, which together accounted for a further 33%.

The United States, with a CAGR of +67.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average vitamin export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 165%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+33.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, supplies from abroad of provitamins and vitamins increased by 24% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports saw a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 97%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vitamin imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +79.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 62%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of vitamin to Kenya, accounting for a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, vitamin imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Switzerland (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (X tons), with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +16.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Switzerland (+21.1% per year) and India (-3.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest vitamin suppliers to Kenya were Switzerland ($X), China ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports. These countries were followed by India, South Africa, Belgium, Italy, the UK and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 12%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +57.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average vitamin import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 130% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+17.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
