Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 102% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rare gases exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tanzania (X cubic meters), Uganda (X cubic meters) and the United Arab Emirates (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of rare gases exports from Kenya, together comprising 80% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +56.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X), Uganda ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest markets for rare gases exported from Kenya worldwide, together comprising 70% of total exports. These countries were followed by Rwanda, Somalia and Burundi, which together accounted for a further 24%.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of rare gases (excluding argon), when their volume increased by 30% to X cubic meters. In general, imports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 310%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rare gases imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 115% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of rare gases to Kenya, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, rare gases imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Algeria (X cubic meters), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X cubic meters), with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates totaled +19.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (+35.3% per year) and France (+70.3% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rare gases (excluding argon) to Kenya, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United Arab Emirates stood at +17.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (+29.3% per year) and France (+59.8% per year).

The average rare gases import price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, with a decrease of -18.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 86%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Algeria ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
