Exports from Kenya

In 2022, refined coconut oil exports from Kenya plummeted to X tons, which is down by -34.3% on the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a sharp contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 1,140%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, refined coconut oil exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 2,091%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Yemen (X tons) was the main destination for refined coconut oil exports from Kenya, accounting for a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, refined coconut oil exports to Yemen exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 19% share.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Kenya

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of refined coconut (copra) oil decreased by -1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 301%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, refined coconut oil imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 303% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Malaysia (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of refined coconut oil imports to Kenya, together comprising 94% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +43.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
