Relay Market Size in Kenya

In 2022, the Kenyan relay market increased by 23% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption saw a prominent increase. Relay consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the amount of relays exported from Kenya reduced markedly to X units, with a decrease of -25.6% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 76%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, relay exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 62%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

France (X units) was the main destination for relay exports from Kenya, with a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, relay exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X units), threefold. Tanzania (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to France totaled +1,594.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+17.7% per year) and Tanzania (-11.8% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for relays exports from Kenya, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to France amounted to +689.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+14.6% per year) and Tanzania (-8.7% per year).

In 2022, the average relay export price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 8.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 91%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kenya

Relay imports into Kenya soared to X units in 2022, picking up by 22% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 161% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, relay imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 204%. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of relay to Kenya, accounting for a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, relay imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X units), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Turkey (X units), with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +37.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-1.7% per year) and Turkey (+40.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest relay suppliers to Kenya were China ($X), India ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 55% of total imports. South Korea, Turkey, Singapore, South Africa, France, Spain and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per unit), while the price for South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+15.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
