Sailboat Market Size in Kenya

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Kenyan sailboat market, when its value increased by 22% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption posted a mild expansion. Sailboat consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sailboat production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 145%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor decreased by -35.7% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, saw significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 2,700%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, sailboat exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 2,319%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Tanzania (X units), Uganda (X units) and South Sudan (X units) were the main destinations of sailboat exports from Kenya, with a combined 70% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +38.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for sailboat exported from Kenya were Uganda ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Burundi ($X), with a combined 70% share of total exports. Rwanda, Mozambique, South Sudan and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

The average sailboat export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 803% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a significant increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Ireland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+46.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor decreased by -50% to X units in 2020. In general, imports recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 850%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2020, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sailboat imports shrank markedly to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 281%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor to Kenya, comprising 4.8% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 0.8% share of total imports.
