The Kenyan semiconductor LED market contracted slightly to $X in 2021, which is down by -4% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption recorded resilient growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Kenya

For the third year in a row, Kenya recorded decline in overseas shipments of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs), which decreased by -53.2% to X units in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 248% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor LED exports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 152% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X units) was the main destination for semiconductor LED exports from Kenya, accounting for a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, semiconductor LED exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tanzania (X units), twofold. South Sudan (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Uganda was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (-5.3% per year) and South Sudan (-0.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for semiconductor LED exported from Kenya were Uganda ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Burundi ($X), with a combined 68% share of total exports. South Sudan, Zambia, Madagascar and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Among the main countries of destination, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +243.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average semiconductor LED export price amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -3.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 34%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+12.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, the amount of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) imported into Kenya expanded rapidly to X units, growing by 11% against 2020. Overall, imports saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 121%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, semiconductor LED imports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 116%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) was the main semiconductor LED supplier to Kenya, accounting for a 95% share of total imports. Moreover, semiconductor LED imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X units), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +19.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+11.1% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-26.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) to Kenya, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 3.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +19.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+4.7% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-26.0% per year).

In 2021, the average semiconductor LED import price amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -23.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 43%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
