In 2021, the Kenyan sesame oil market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Sesame oil exports from Kenya reduced markedly to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -42.7% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 680% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sesame oil exports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 1,017%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Belgium (X tons), France (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of sesame oil exports from Kenya, together accounting for 79% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in France (with a CAGR of +85.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), the UK ($X) and France ($X) constituted the largest markets for sesame oil exported from Kenya worldwide, together comprising 87% of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, France, with a CAGR of +69.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, the average sesame oil export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 193%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of sesame oil, when their volume decreased by -49.9% to X tons. In general, imports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 224% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sesame oil imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 181%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Uganda (X tons) was the main sesame oil supplier to Kenya, with a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by China (X kg), with a 1.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Uganda amounted to -19.1%.
In value terms, Uganda ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sesame oil to Kenya, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 3% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Uganda totaled -14.5%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sesame oil import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sesame oil import price increased by +54.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Uganda amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.1%).
