Overall, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 228%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 388%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey (X tons) was the main destination for sheepskin and lambskin exports from Kenya, accounting for a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, sheepskin and lambskin exports to Turkey exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X tons), fivefold. India (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Turkey stood at +20.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (+110.6% per year) and India (+11.2% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the key foreign market for sheep or lamb skins (without wool) exports from Kenya, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Turkey stood at +22.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+15.0% per year) and Pakistan (-14.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average sheepskin and lambskin export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -7.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 58%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+102.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya
In 2022, overseas purchases of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) decreased by -39.7% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 1,286% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.
In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin imports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 254% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Rwanda (X tons) was the main sheepskin and lambskin supplier to Kenya, with a approx. 100% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Rwanda totaled +56.3%.
In value terms, Rwanda ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) to Kenya.
