Shelled Walnut Market Size in Kenya
The Kenyan shelled walnut market fell notably to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -27.7% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. Shelled walnut consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Exports from Kenya
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of shelled walnuts decreased by -14.3% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, shelled walnut exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Uganda (X kg), Germany (X kg) and Rwanda (X kg) were the main destinations of shelled walnut exports from Kenya, together accounting for 94% of total exports. Luxembourg lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 6.2%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +52.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for shelled walnuts exports from Kenya, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uganda ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Luxembourg, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany totaled +2.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (+4.2% per year) and Luxembourg (+59.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average shelled walnut export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 1.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 64%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of shelled walnuts decreased by -27.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 172% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, shelled walnut imports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 275% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of shelled walnut to Kenya, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, shelled walnut imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Iran (X kg), with a 9.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at +21.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+32.7% per year) and Iran (+85.7% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of shelled walnuts to Kenya, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Uganda, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States amounted to +9.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+29.2% per year) and Uganda (+38.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average shelled walnut import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 38%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
