From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, baking soda exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 42%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the main destinations of baking soda exports from Kenya, together accounting for 87% of total exports. These countries were followed by Ethiopia, Congo, the UK, Malawi and Democratic Republic of the Congo, which together accounted for a further 9.8%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Congo (with a CAGR of +250.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uganda ($X), Tanzania ($X) and the Philippines ($X) were the largest markets for baking soda exported from Kenya worldwide, together comprising 67% of total exports. Congo, Ethiopia, Malawi, the UK and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Congo, with a CAGR of +210.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average baking soda export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 35% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

Baking soda imports into Kenya contracted to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -14.3% against the previous year's figure. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -23.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 76%. Turkey (X tons), China (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of baking soda imports to Kenya, together comprising 72% of total imports. These countries were followed by Russia, India, Belgium, Swaziland and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +74.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
