Soft Drink Market Size in Kenya

In 2021, the Kenyan soft drink market decreased by -3.8% to $X for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. In general, the total consumption indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +88.5% against 2012 indices. In value terms, soft drink production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +106.3% against 2012 indices. Exports from Kenya

In 2021, soft drink exports from Kenya skyrocketed to X litres, picking up by 92% against the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 210% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, soft drink exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable increase. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Uganda (X litres) was the main destination for soft drink exports from Kenya, with a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, soft drink exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X litres), fivefold. Denmark (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Uganda totaled +14.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+39.5% per year) and Denmark (+2,615.0% per year).

In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for soft drink exports from Kenya, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Denmark ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Uganda totaled +9.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Denmark (+393.3% per year) and Rwanda (+38.5% per year).

The average soft drink export price stood at $X per litre in 2021, with a decrease of -7.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 53%. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Somalia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mauritius (+11.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, approx. X litres of soft drinks were imported into Kenya; jumping by 26% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 179% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, soft drink imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 217%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Tanzania (X litres), South Africa (X litres) and Austria (X litres) were the main suppliers of soft drink imports to Kenya, with a combined 81% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in South Africa (with a CAGR of +63.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Austria ($X) and Tanzania ($X) were the largest soft drink suppliers to Kenya, together comprising 84% of total imports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 66% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per litre), while the price for Uganda ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
