Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for sorbitol exports from Kenya, accounting for a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, sorbitol exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Burundi (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+7.0%).

Imports into Kenya
In 2021, purchases abroad of sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol) decreased by -10.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 388%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sorbitol imports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 544% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sorbitol to Kenya, with a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, sorbitol imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Indonesia amounted to +25.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+3.4% per year) and France (-17.5% per year).
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol) to Kenya, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 2.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Indonesia amounted to +32.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+7.5% per year) and France (-11.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average sorbitol import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 32% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were France ($X per ton) and India ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) and the United States ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
