Plastic Support Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan plastic support market amounted to $X in 2022, increasing by 9.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. Plastic support consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Kenya

In 2022, shipments abroad of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics increased by 1.3% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 98%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic support exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for plastic support exports from Kenya, with a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic support exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tanzania (X tons), fourfold. Rwanda (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Uganda stood at -4.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (-16.5% per year) and Rwanda (+35.1% per year).

In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for spools, cops and similar supports of plastics exports from Kenya, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Uganda amounted to -5.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (-11.4% per year) and Rwanda (+36.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic support export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Sudan (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

Plastic support imports into Kenya dropped to X tons in 2022, waning by -12.9% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic support imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), China (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic support imports to Kenya, with a combined 67% share of total imports. Germany, Turkey, the United States, South Africa and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +40.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), India ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the largest plastic support suppliers to Kenya, together accounting for 63% of total imports. The United States, Germany, Turkey, South Africa and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +32.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average plastic support import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
