The Kenyan market for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 96%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Rwanda (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) were the main destinations of candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports from Kenya, together comprising 57% of total exports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Burundi and South Sudan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Malawi (with a CAGR of +9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exported from Kenya were Uganda ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Rwanda ($X), together comprising 64% of total exports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Burundi and South Sudan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery decreased by -22.9% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 82%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 99%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
