In value terms, sulphur exports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, exports faced a sharp reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 123%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Uganda (X kg) was the main destination for sulphur exports from Kenya, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, sulphur exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X kg), sixfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Uganda stood at -39.1%.
In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for sulphur (sublimed or precipitated) and colloidal sulphur exports from Kenya, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Rwanda ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Uganda amounted to -36.4%.
Export Prices by Country
The average sulphur export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -6.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 136% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+4.5%).
Sulphur Imports
Imports into Kenya
For the third consecutive year, Kenya recorded decline in overseas purchases of sulphur (sublimed or precipitated) and colloidal sulphur, which decreased by -70.2% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports saw a sharp shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 128% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sulphur imports fell significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 109%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and South Korea (X kg) were the main suppliers of sulphur imports to Kenya, together accounting for 92% of total imports. India, China, the UK and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.7%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +2.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), China ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the largest sulphur suppliers to Kenya, together comprising 80% of total imports.
China, with a CAGR of +24.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sulphur import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 101%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+38.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
