In 2022, shipments abroad of surgical gloves decreased by -13.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 4,423%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, surgical glove exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 3,930%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Sudan (X tons), Somalia (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) were the main destinations of surgical glove exports from Kenya, with a combined 46% share of total exports. Uganda, Tanzania, Afghanistan, Malawi, Djibouti and Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +105.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Somalia ($X), South Sudan ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constituted the largest markets for surgical glove exported from Kenya worldwide, together accounting for 55% of total exports. Afghanistan, Uganda, Malawi, Tanzania, Djibouti and Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +154.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average surgical glove export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 16% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+26.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

Surgical glove imports into Kenya dropped slightly to X tons in 2022, declining by -3.9% on 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 125%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, surgical glove imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), India (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main suppliers of surgical glove imports to Kenya, together accounting for 88% of total imports. Thailand, Switzerland and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.4%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Switzerland (with a CAGR of +73.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest surgical glove suppliers to Kenya were India ($X), China ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together accounting for 83% of total imports. These countries were followed by Switzerland, Australia and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 5.5%.

In 2022, the average surgical glove import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -13.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 37%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
