In value terms, organic pigments exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 246% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Uganda (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the main destinations of organic pigments exports from Kenya, together comprising 72% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +85.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X), Uganda ($X) and Rwanda ($X) constituted the largest markets for organic pigments exported from Kenya worldwide, with a combined 76% share of total exports. Zambia, Ethiopia, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Malawi lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +53.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average organic pigments export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -15.9% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, organic pigments export price decreased by -19.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 123% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ethiopia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malawi (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya
For the third year in a row, Kenya recorded decline in supplies from abroad of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments, which decreased by -4.3% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, organic pigments imports reached $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of organic pigments to Kenya, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, organic pigments imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), sixfold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India amounted to +5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-2.7% per year) and South Korea (+13.2% per year).
In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments to Kenya, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from India stood at +10.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-4.7% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-0.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average organic pigments import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 16% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+29.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
