Syringe Market Size in Kenya

After four years of growth, the Kenyan syringe market decreased by -1.1% to $X in 2022. Overall, the total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +43.0% against 2015 indices. Syringe consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Syringe Production in Kenya

In value terms, syringe production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +57.2% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 41% against the previous year. Syringe production peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Exports from Kenya

In 2022, shipments abroad of syringes, with or without needles decreased by -8.5% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 81%. The exports peaked at X units in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, syringe exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Tanzania (X units), Uganda (X units) and Madagascar (X units) were the main destinations of syringe exports from Kenya, together comprising 76% of total exports. Sudan, Morocco, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +4,031.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for syringes, with or without needles exports from Kenya, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Uganda totaled +13.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+9.7% per year) and Morocco (+4,013.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average syringe export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 45%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to South Africa (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, approx. X units of syringes, with or without needles were imported into Kenya; growing by 3.1% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, syringe imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 43%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of syringe to Kenya, accounting for a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, syringe imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X units), with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-6.2% per year) and India (-12.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of syringes, with or without needles to Kenya, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+1.8% per year) and Spain (-16.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average syringe import price amounted to $X per thousand units, dropping by -17.6% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, syringe import price increased by +25.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 52%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per thousand units, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per thousand units), while the price for Belgium ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
