Overall, exports, however, posted a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 176%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, iron household articles exports contracted notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 181% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Ethiopia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and South Sudan (X tons) were the main destinations of iron household articles exports from Kenya, together accounting for 73% of total exports.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of table, kitchen or household articles and parts of iron increased by 4.3% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, iron household articles imports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, faced a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 94%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of iron household articles to Kenya, with a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, iron household articles imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -12.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+11.7% per year) and the UK (+32.4% per year).
