In value terms, wood kitchenware and tableware exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 1,150% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for wood kitchenware and tableware exports from Kenya, accounting for a 25% share of total exports. Moreover, wood kitchenware and tableware exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ghana (X kg), twofold. The United Arab Emirates (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States stood at -25.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ghana (+20.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+26.4% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for wood kitchenware and tableware exported from Kenya were the United States ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and South Korea ($X), together accounting for 55% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +77.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wood kitchenware and tableware export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 11% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wood kitchenware and tableware export price decreased by -4.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+40.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Tableware And Kitchenware Of Wood
Imports into Kenya
In 2021, purchases abroad of tableware and kitchenware of wood decreased by -32% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 121% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
In value terms, wood kitchenware and tableware imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 109%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest wood kitchenware and tableware supplier to Kenya, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, wood kitchenware and tableware imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Tanzania (X tons), sixfold. Sweden (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +37.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+19.5% per year) and Sweden (+92.7% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tableware and kitchenware of wood to Kenya, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 4.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +36.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+14.2% per year) and Sweden (+74.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wood kitchenware and tableware import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
