Uganda (X kg), South Sudan (X kg) and Somalia (X kg) were the main destinations of tapioca and substitutes exports from Kenya.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by South Sudan (with a CAGR of -5.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Somalia ($X) remains the key foreign market for tapioca and substitutes exports from Kenya, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Sudan ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Somalia amounted to -28.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Sudan (-6.5% per year) and Uganda (-33.6% per year).

In 2021, the average tapioca and substitutes export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Somalia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Somalia (+9.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya
In 2021, overseas purchases of tapioca and substitutes increased by 2,013% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, faced a sharp slump. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tapioca and substitutes imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a dramatic contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 4,006%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) constituted the largest tapioca and substitutes supplier to Kenya, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, tapioca and substitutes imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), more than tenfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Vietnam was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-47.9% per year) and India (-41.9% per year).
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tapioca and substitutes to Kenya, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 6.8% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 2.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Vietnam was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-2.6% per year) and India (+6.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average tapioca and substitutes import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a modest expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 152% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
