The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X litres) was the main destination for non-mineral or non-aerated water exports from Kenya, accounting for a 3.4% share of total exports. Moreover, non-mineral or non-aerated water exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X litres), fourfold. Belgium (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 0.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands stood at +35.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-7.0% per year) and Belgium (+72.6% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for non-mineral or non-aerated waters exports from Kenya, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the Netherlands stood at +26.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+27.1% per year) and Spain (+17.8% per year).

The average non-mineral or non-aerated water export price stood at $X per litre in 2021, dropping by -67.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 178%. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Non-Mineral or Non-Aerated Waters
Imports into Kenya
Non-mineral or non-aerated water imports into Kenya rose significantly to X litres in 2021, growing by 7.5% against the year before. In general, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 677% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, non-mineral or non-aerated water imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 596% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Turkey (X litres), South Africa (X litres) and the United Arab Emirates (X litres) were the main suppliers of non-mineral or non-aerated water imports to Kenya, with a combined 92% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +36.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-mineral or non-aerated waters to Kenya, comprising 72% of total imports. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 104%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per litre), while the price for Turkey ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
