The exports peaked at X litres in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 25%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Uganda (X litres) was the main destination for exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages from Kenya, accounting for a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tanzania (X litres), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Sudan (X litres), with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Uganda totaled -13.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (-21.1% per year) and South Sudan (-13.9% per year).
In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages exports from Kenya, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Sudan ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Uganda stood at -9.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Sudan (-10.2% per year) and Tanzania (-17.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average export price for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages amounted to $X per litre, surging by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a temperate expansion. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Sudan ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya
In 2022, the amount of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages imported into Kenya skyrocketed to X litres, jumping by 27% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 122% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at X litres in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Tanzania (X litres) constituted the largest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages supplier to Kenya, accounting for a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages from Tanzania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X litres), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the UK (X litres), with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Tanzania stood at +22.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+23.3% per year) and the UK (+14.9% per year).
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) constituted the largest supplier of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages to Kenya, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 6.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Tanzania amounted to +22.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+51.7% per year) and South Africa (-5.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average import price for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages amounted to $X per litre, shrinking by -20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 55% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
