In 2021, the Kenyan glass fiber market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, glass fiber exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 123%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) were the main destinations of glass fiber exports from Kenya, with a combined 84% share of total exports. Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Sudan (with a CAGR of +17.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average glass fiber export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 67%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of voiles, webs, mats and other articles of glass fibers increased by 56% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 159% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, glass fiber imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 122% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest glass fiber supplier to Kenya, with a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, glass fiber imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Egypt (X tons), with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +13.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+5.8% per year) and Egypt (-1.9% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of voiles, webs, mats and other articles of glass fibers to Kenya, comprising 48% of total imports.
