Wadding Market Size in Kenya

Exports from Kenya

For the third year in a row, Kenya recorded decline in shipments abroad of wadding, which decreased by -45.8% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 379%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wadding exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports faced a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 173%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Sudan (X tons), Eritrea (X tons) and Rwanda (X kg) were the main destinations of wadding exports from Kenya, with a combined 91% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sudan (with a CAGR of +19.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Eritrea ($X), Sudan ($X) and Rwanda ($X) were the largest markets for wadding exported from Kenya worldwide, together accounting for 96% of total exports.

Sudan, with a CAGR of +12.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

The average wadding export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 101%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Eritrea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+17.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, purchases abroad of wadding was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 132% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wadding imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 86%. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of wadding to Kenya, accounting for a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, wadding imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the UK (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland amounted to +21.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-16.7% per year) and the UK (-1.2% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wadding to Kenya, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Poland totaled +2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-4.5% per year) and Brazil (+71.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average wadding import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -3.6% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wadding import price increased by +13.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 42%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+16.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
