In 2021, the Kenyan watch market decreased by -21.2% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, consumption showed a significant decrease. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Kenya

In 2021, watch exports from Kenya amounted to X units, growing by 12% on the year before. Overall, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 134% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the average watch export price amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -12.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 83% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+25.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, supplies from abroad of watches decreased by -20.7% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a precipitous decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, watch imports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 52%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest watch supplier to Kenya, with a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, watch imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X units), tenfold. Mauritius (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.9% share.
