Whisky Market Size in Kenya

After two years of growth, the Kenyan whisky market decreased by -6.2% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption saw a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 370% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X litres in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whisky exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 521% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X litres), the United Arab Emirates (X litres) and South Sudan (X litres) were the main destinations of whisky exports from Kenya, together comprising 64% of total exports. These countries were followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, the UK, the Netherlands and Uganda, which together accounted for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +84.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for whisky exported from Kenya were the UK ($X), Rwanda ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 52% of total exports. South Sudan, the Netherlands, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +74.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average whisky export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, shrinking by -12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, whisky export price increased by +4.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 32%. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Sudan (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

After five years of growth, purchases abroad of whisky decreased by -1.6% to X litres in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 110%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, whisky imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 83%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

The UK (X litres), India (X litres) and Ireland (X litres) were the main suppliers of whisky imports to Kenya, with a combined 92% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +25.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of whisky to Kenya, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Ireland, with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the UK stood at +22.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+22.9% per year) and Ireland (+16.8% per year).

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the price for India ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
