Mobile Phone Market Size in Kenya

After two years of growth, the Kenyan mobile phone market decreased by -30% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, showed perceptible growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of mobile phones, when their volume increased by 7.9% to X units. In general, exports, however, recorded a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 107%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mobile phone exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a precipitous contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Hong Kong SAR (X units) was the main destination for mobile phone exports from Kenya, accounting for a 91% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK (X units), with a 2% share of total exports. The third position in this ranking was taken by Tanzania (X units), with a 1.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hong Kong SAR amounted to -10.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-1.4% per year) and Tanzania (-46.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for mobile phone exported from Kenya were the UK ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 83% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the UK, with a CAGR of +30.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average mobile phone export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -35.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 156% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+34.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, the amount of mobile phones imported into Kenya fell to X units, shrinking by -9.7% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 264% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mobile phone imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 413% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest mobile phone supplier to Kenya, with a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, mobile phone imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Hong Kong SAR (X units), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +23.3%.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mobile phones to Kenya, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 31% share of total imports.

The average mobile phone import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -46.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 87% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit), while the price for China stood at $X per unit.
