For the third consecutive year, Kuwait recorded decline in purchases abroad of cherries and sour cherries, which decreased by -72.6% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 865%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 1,290% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Lebanon (X tons) constituted the largest cherry and sour cherry supplier to Kuwait, with a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, cherry and sour cherry imports from Lebanon exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), fourfold. Jordan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Lebanon was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (-14.9% per year) and Jordan (-18.7% per year).

In value terms, Lebanon ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cherries and sour cherries to Kuwait, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Lebanon amounted to +10.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+18.3% per year) and Australia (+5.4% per year).

The average cherry and sour cherry import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 71%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
