Cigarettes containing tobacco exports from Kuwait surged to X tons in 2022, picking up by 131% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports showed a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for cigarettes containing tobacco exports from Kuwait, with a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, cigarettes containing tobacco exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bahrain (X tons), more than tenfold. Iraq (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates totaled +20.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bahrain (-0.3% per year) and Iraq (+14.5% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for cigarettes containing tobacco exports from Kuwait, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iraq ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United Arab Emirates totaled +21.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iraq (+27.1% per year) and Bahrain (-1.6% per year).

In 2022, the average cigarettes containing tobacco export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -16.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 66%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kuwait

For the fifth consecutive year, Kuwait recorded decline in overseas purchases of cigarettes containing tobacco, which decreased by -15.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 16%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Bahrain (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main suppliers of cigarettes containing tobacco imports to Kuwait, with a combined 62% share of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Portugal, Pakistan, Poland, the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 32%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +40.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cigarettes containing tobacco suppliers to Kuwait were Germany ($X), Bahrain ($X) and Turkey ($X), with a combined 54% share of total imports. Portugal, India, Poland, Pakistan, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +38.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average cigarettes containing tobacco import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the price for Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
